Spiritual Reflection - We are Emmauns
We are Emmauns.
As Jesus accompanies us on our journey this Lent, let us:
- slow to his pace
 - listen more deliberately
 - discern habitually
 - expect confidently to be transformed
 - gather and break bread joyously
 - act with intent for justice and peace

May we shadow Him with a deliberate focus on the slow, measured, careful movements of the Artisan of Peace.
WEEK 1 – SLOW
The Lenten Journey is our traditional period of preparation for Easter. Although the term ‘Lent’ refers to the ‘lengthening of days’ during the northern hemisphere spring, for us in the Land of the Southern Cross there is ‘the lengthening of nights’ instead. As the nights get longer and autumn deepens, the opportunities for transformation within our environment emerge. The slowing down, rest, recuperation, shedding, alternate sounds; quietness; nourishment and recovery gifted to us by God and our Common Home during this season facilitate our preparation during Lent. We adjust to the deliberate slow pace of Jesus.
In his book Talent is Overrated on deliberate practice, Geoff Colvin suggests that a practice is a type of preparation and he highlights a counter intuitive method of growth and development –
“A study of figure skaters found that sub-elite skaters spent lots of time working on the jumps they could already do, while skaters at the highest levels spent more time on the jumps they couldn’t do, the kind that ultimately wins Olympic medals and that involve lots of falling down before they’re mastered.”
The improvement will not come with adhering to and repeating our strengths and past habits but an intentional slowing, listening, discerning and acting on identified areas of growth that we all have.
