AFL Paul Kelly Cup

On Wednesday March 1st 2023, some students from Year 5 and 6 represented the school at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. The boys team played very well, winning all 4 games and placing 1st in their respective pool. The team was unlucky to lose by 2 points in the semi-final, against the school that would go on to win the tournament. Although the boys lost in a very close final game, they could keep their heads held high and be very proud of the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the tournament and how they represented the school.

On Tuesday 7th March, St Columbkille's swim team was joined by ten other schools from the South Coast schools within our Diocese to compete in the South Coast Swimming Carnival at Corrimal Pool. Holy Spirit College students donated their time to the primary school event assisting with timing and other duties. The day started out cloudy and cold, but after 30 minutes the day was scorching.

Soon competitors were in the water swimming harder than ever before. The day was fun but competitive. First was freestyle then relays, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and the carnival ended with medleys. The school team showed amazing sportsmanship cheering on all classmates. The new captains really showed leadership and being supportive to all, living out their role.

The success of the day was seen in the smiles and tired bodies that left the pool at the end of the day. Ms Emmett would like to congratulate and thank all athletes for their sportsmanship and determination in doing their best in some really energy zapping conditions.

We would like to mention two outstanding athletes:

Stella Howell - placed 2nd in the junior girls point score

Lennox Elliot - 3rd in junior boys point score

Placing 2nd in the male and 4th in the female point score, the SCC Team placed 4th overall in the competition. Well done!

Testament to the effort of our athletes, SCC have 16 students invited to attend the Wollongong Diocese Selection Trials on Monday 13th March, including our Junior boys, Junior girls and Senior boys 4 x 50m Freestyle relay. We wish them all the best.

Michelle Emmett - Swim Team Manager
