Tips from the video:
-
Aim to provide reassurance without increasing worries
 -
Don't be afraid to talk about the coronavirus. Not talking about it when it is in the media can be more distressing.
 -
Adults should consume the news and provide young people with factual information at an age appropriate level.
 -
Be developmentally appropriate, avoid to much information at one time.
 -
Parents can invite children to ask them questions, allowing parents to confirm if true or not. Avoid asking children questions as this can encourage frightening fantasies.
 -
Adults must deal with own anxiety before talking to young people. Be calm.
 -
Focus on what young people can do to stay safe-hygiene practices.
 -
Stick to normal routines-be consistent and predictable. (At home regular mealtimes, bedtimes etc).
 -
It's okay to tell young people you do not know the answer to a question and that if/when you do, you will get back to them.
