Dear Parents and Carers,
Hope that you are well and have enjoyed your week.
Congratulations to the P&F for their outstanding work in organising our SCC Colour Run and Splatular. Our students, staff, parents and grandparents enjoyed the fun, multitude of colour and copious slime that was evident throughout the afternoon. Thank you Sarah Foster and Kelly Savski for their time, effort and energy they have dedicated to the success of the day. We greatly appreciate the support of the many parents volunteered in the running of the event and for the sponsorship of their child/ren. It was a brilliant afternoon and we look forward to the next SCC Colour Run and Splatular.
National Sorry Day 2022 is acknowledged on Thursday 26 May and is a day when we pause to remember the Stolen Generations of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It leads us into National Reconciliation Week which is held each year between 27th May and 3rd June.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2022 is Be Brave. Make Change. Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. May Reconciliation Week be an occasion where we consider our nation's history, acknowledge past hurts and move forward creating welcoming hearts and spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Thank you to Mrs Herring, Mrs Orphin and Aunty Shaz for their organisation, reflection and insightful words during our Reconciliation Week Liturgy yesterday. Members of Year 5 and 6 students retold the Dreamtime story - Gang Man Gang where outstanding in their storytelling and acting.
Our Year 3 and 5 students have participated the annual NAPLAN testing in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Thank you to Mrs Perre, Mrs Disibio and our Year 3 and 5 teachers Mrs Griggs, Mrs McLeod, Ms Moretti, Mrs Rathbone, Mr Lowrie and Mrs Lace for their preparation and students of our students throughout Weeks 3 and 4.
On Friday 27 May, there will be planned teacher industrial strike action. Our school will remain open for supervision only due to minimal staffing. Parents and carers may choose to keep their child/ren at home on this day.
Wishing you a sensational weekend. Thank you for your ongoing support of our wonderful school - St Columbkille's, Corrimal.
Wrap with Love
Father Anthony has sent an invitation to join a worthwhile group initiative. Parents/carers may be interested in joining the parish group who meet regularly as part of the Wrap With Love project (www.wrapwithlove.org). This group knits/crochets blankets, clothing and other items to be given to those in need. If you would like to be a part of this community building and humanitarian initiative, as well as enjoy a cup of tea and attend Mass afterwards, please contact the school.
National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day 2022 falls this year on Thursday 26 May and is a day when we pause to remember the Stolen Generations of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This is the day when we remember the loss experienced by children who were taken from their mothers to places away from their country and culture - to places away from their family. We lament and we say “sorry”. A short clip is attached for further information titled State of Reconciliation in Australia
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week 2022 is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The theme for 2022 is “Be Brave. Make Change.” It is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
Yesterday our St Columbkille’s community celebrated the beginning of National Reconciliation Week with a liturgy and performance in the hall. Our Indigenous students re-enacted the story “Gang Man Gang”, a traditional Aboriginal story of the Illawarra area. A special gift was given to Aboriginal aunty, Aunty Shaz, which was a specially designed and decorated drum by Mrs Liz Orphin and her husband Ray. The drums images were related to the story of “Gang Man Gang”. Some students were also given the task of playing the final song with didgeridoos and clapsticks. Thanks to all those who have helped with this celebration
Our Lady Help Of Christians
This solemnity within the church is acknowledged on 24th May. It is an important feast in our country because Our Lady, under the title “Help of Christians”, is a spiritual Patron of Australia, along with St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop. We continue to pray to Mary for all our needs, both spoken out loud and in our hearts.
Confirmation
We trust that you are working through your Confirmation booklet and logging on to the lessons and session learning within Google classroom. You should have received an email about the dress code for Confirmation and who can be your sponsor. If you haven’t booked for the Wednesday or Thursday evening, please do so asap through the link below.

We continue to pray for these students as they embrace the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Reflection - Laudato Si': Integrating into the Spirit
'Listening and Journeying Together’.
At the time of celebrating Laudato Si' week, the importance of fostering right relationships is the focal point for our Catholic communities. Fostering quality relationships challenges us to examine the gift of our spirituality that allows an exchange, as Pope Francis names the ‘integral ecology’. This is done by listening and journeying together.
A working definition of spirituality is that which views as our inner core, made up of lived experiences and from which come motivations, commitments and actions that emerge. …. One may say it is the shape in which the Holy Spirit finds a place in our lives.
This definition allows us to connect spirit to the “here and now", the mistakes that lead to learning, the learning that moves us to new places, the places at which we arrive, that provide our environment for living. It allows us to integrate spirit within our operating world. It allows us to access greater insight, awareness, and presence in our relationships.
A famous cartoon once appeared in the “New Yorker” magazine depicting a man faced with two options - a door accessing heaven and another door - getting to books about heaven. It's a clever depiction of the world we live in today - an information age that allows us access to learning about anything we seek! The challenge though is to reflect on whether we really get to experience life- in the present, awakened, and intentional. Are we actively choosing the door to heaven or are we content with reading about it?
The Trappist monk and mystic, Thomas Merton had a similar message for a group of scholars visiting him at the Gethsemane Hermitage. Armed with books and pens ready to take notes from Merton, he asked them to put their books down, went to the fridge, took out bottles of beer for the small group, and told them they were going out into the woods, their books and pens wouldn’t help them there. Being out in the forest with one another was all they needed to experience.
The Pulitzer prize winning poet, Mary Oliver also challenges our awareness of a listening presence in her poem I wake close to morning…
“Why do people keep asking to see God’s identity papers when the darkness opening into morning is more than enough? Certainly, any God might turn away in disgust. Think of Sheba approaching the Kingdom of Solomon. Do you think she had to ask, “Is this the place?”
The two mystics challenge the notion of a Laudato Si' “week” to preferring a Laudato Si' practice and formation - a day in, day out knowing and valuing. The magic of this week is the opportunity it gives us to make that choice. This then helps us to engage with the ‘integral-ecology’’ the work, practice, and intention of making a ‘wholeness’ complete, a pathway forward to an ecology that embeds peace within the inner life with others we meet on our journey, and a peace where we rest with our God.

Diocesan Cross Country
Due to the ongoing wet weather and challenges finding suitable venues the re-scheduled Diocesan Cross Country will now be held at the Narellan Sports Hub on Tuesday 24 May. Unfortunately, with these changes, schools across the Diocese have had to reduced the number of competitiors attending which is disappointing for the students affected. We wish our team of Ava Cooper 6B, Amelia Rutledge 6G, Bailey Mitchell 6B, Randy O'Brien 5G, Sophie Coughlan 4G, Harrison Esteves 4G, Ben Franco 4B and Sabina Santillan 4G all the very best next week in Narellan.

Today we celebrtated Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD). This annual event is in its 23rd year. The campaign encourages all primary school children, their paretns and carers to walk safely and regulary to school. The event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the enviornement.
The objectives of WSTSD are:
- To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
- To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
- To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
- To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
- To promote the use of Public Transport.
- To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
- To reduce the level of traffic congestion.
Today we had many students and families ride, walk and catch public transport to school. These students were all give a Walk Safely to School Tattoo to wear.
Thank you to all those who particpated.

SCC School Band - Volunteers Needed
We would like to afford our musical students to be part of the Cobra School Band, hence we are asking for a volunteer or two, parent, grandparent, older sibbling or friend to practice with the Cobra Band weekly or fortnightly. The Cobra Band will play each fortnight at the School Award Assembly.
If you are interested in volunteering and helping out our school community in this manner, please email Mrs Disibio or Mr Colquhoun.
Thanks in advance!
Teacher Professional Planning Day - Pupil Free Day - Friday 10 June
Friday 10 June will be a Pupil Free Day: Staff will be learning about and working through the K-2 new Literacy and Numeracy Modules.
All students are expected to wear the full winter school uniform from Monday 23 May. If you have any concerns regarding the winter uniform, please contact the office.
Link to uniform policy and information.
If your child has a broken bone or a significant injury that may impact their learning and/or mobility, it is essentail that the school is given a medical certificate and/or Doctor’s clearance letter upon their return to school. We need this certificate and/or clearance for your child to be at school and hence it needs to be supplied on the day of return to school. This certificate and/or clearance allows us to adjust the curriculum to suit your child’s needs and if required, assign a school support officer to your child, all considering the well being and safety of your child.
Mrs Pauline Leonard - Leader of Diverse Learning
Reminder - No Dogs or Pets on School Grounds
A reminder to all families and community members that dogs are not permitted on any of our school grounds unless they are assistance dogs. We have a student in our school that has an Anaphylaxtic reaction to dog fur/hair, hence this is for their safety and for the safety of all our community.
