Welcome back to a new year of learning and celebration. I trust you enjoyed the holiday break with family and friends.  As we begin our new year as a school community, we welcome new students, families and staff. We especially welcome our Kindergarten students who begin their journey at our wonderful school.

Our vision “Learning Together, Shaping Futures” and our core values of faith, responsibility, respect, learning, community and celebration are a focus in our Religious Education lessons over the beginning weeks. Take some time to talk about these values at home.

We are in a period of Ordinary Time in the church. Some people think it is a time when nothing much happens.  Yet it is important because we are growing to be more like Jesus in our everyday lives by listening to the words of scripture each week. Life is not only about the special events and celebrations, it is about who we are in our day to day interactions.

Project Compassion Lenten Launch

Our school leaders will attend the Lenten launch for Project Compassion on Tuesday 5 March at St Brigid’s, Gywneville. Schools from within our Diocese will take part in this celebration acknowledging the beginning of Lent.

Congratulations to the many students who have already returned their Holiday Reading and Mathematics Challenge booklets. Booklets will be accepted up until Monday 11 February and certificates will be awarded from Week 3. Please remember that only reading completed during the school break will be counted.

It has been great to see so many of our students reading during the holidays and I'm sure their reading skills have improved because of their practise, and it has also been wonderful to see so many students giving the Mathematics Challenge a go. Well done everyone!

Mrs Maria Disibio - Assistant Principal

A St Columbkille's Instagram account has been created. The account will feature photos of our celebrations, news and events and will replace the photo gallery on our school website.  I encourage you to follow our account - @stcolumbkilles.corrimal to view our posts thus far and so you can look out for future posts.

Over the past few months we have been transitioning from Skoolbag to Compass. From today, we will no longer be using Skoolbag and hence the App can be deleted from your devices.  If you haven't already done so, I strongly encourage you to download the Compass App.  Within the Compass App you will find that the St Columbkille's Parent Calendar has also been linked and can be viewed from the homepage or by selecting  the calendar icon in the menu.

If you are have technical difficulties, please see myself or the office staff.

Maria Disibio - Assistant Principal

During Term 1, all students from K-6 will be involved in learning and teaching activities that focus on the rights and responsibilities of all students and staff at St Columbkille’s. They will explore our school’s statement of expectation: At St Columbkille’s, we value learning by being respectful, responsible and safe. Teachers will model these expectations across all school settings (either during class or at a whole school/stage scheduled time), allowing students to then have the opportunity to demonstrate these independently.

Mrs Michelle Lace - Leader of Pastoral Care

At St Columbkille’s we acknowledge and recognise student achievement in all aspects of school life. Merit Awards, Sticker Books, together with the school Core Values, are presented at the Award Assembly on Friday afternoon. Children receive merit awards for academic, behavioural, sporting and social achievements. Our fortnightly Core Value focus is printed in the newsletter and announced at our morning assembly.

Each week, two Merit Awards are presented together with one award for the Core Value focus from each class. Merit Awards from the Library, PE, Music and Italian will also be presented. When your child has received five awards please send them to the school office and they will be presented with a Mary MacKillop Award at the following assembly. When three Mary MacKillop awards have been received a school medallion will be presented to recognise this outstanding achievement. This is ongoing and does not restart at the commencement of each year. Again we ask that the three Mary MacKillop certificates are sent to the office.

STICKER BOOKS

Sticker books are also used by teachers to acknowledge the work of individual children in class on a daily basis. Stickers are numbered and a progressive system (see below) is used to acknowledge achievement. Sticker totals start from zero at the commencement of each school year.

The following levels detail the progression of stickers within the current school year.

10 Stickers – Middle Leader Award (Sticker):
Mrs Herring & Mrs Perre, (Early Stage 1 & Stage 1),  Mrs Lace (Stage 2), Mrs Tyrrell (Stage 3).

Each Tuesday, we are encouraging students to be mindful of the rubbish they generate and to minimise the impact that this has upon our environment. In order to do this, we ask that your children bring their crunch and sip, morning tea and lunch in reusable containers, without the use of plastic wrap or snap-lock bags.

Each week, teachers will be giving ‘Trash-Free Tuesday’ stickers to students who participate, which will be placed into their sticker books to acknowledge their efforts in being environmental stewards.

Clear labelling of all containers/lids/spoons etc. will ensure that items aren’t lost. Not only does this initiative minimise the amount of waste that we produce, but over time, there is a cost saving benefit to this approach.

We look forward to introducing Waste Free Wednesday in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your support and assistance with this whole school initiative.

On Monday 11th February, our Year 3 students as well as newly enrolled students will complete the ACER General Ability Test (AGAT).  The AGAT is an assessment that has been designed to assist teachers in their assessment of students’ general reasoning ability. Following on from this and depending on levels of achievement, students may complete the SLOSSON Intelligence Test which provides a quick, reliable index of intellectual ability. These tests align with our school’s Gifted Education Policy.

Mrs Christine Perre - Middle Leader

During the school holidays the Infants Plaground was upgraded with a sandpit and synthetic grass. Infants classes have thoroughly enjoyed using the new space, which also incluldes a Fairy and Dinosaur Garden curtosity of Mrs Russo. Thank you also to Mrs Disibio for her work in managing the upgrade.

It is timely as we commence the new school year to remind all families, especially those new to our school, of the procedures for using the laneway as a convenient drop off and pick up point.

Please ensure that the following guidelines are adhered to for the safety of all.

  • Children must only be dropped off or picked up in the clearly mark designated area.
  • Overtaking a stationary vehicle is not permitted
  • Children must only enter and exit from the driver side of the car.
  • Pedestrians crossing the laneway must only cross at the designated area. PLEASE do not walk with your children down the laneway. There is no pedestrian access and doing so places all at risk of a serious accident.
  • Family names are to be clearly displayed in the front of all cars, to be easily seen by our staff members, on the sunvisor or the windscreen. (Please see the office if you require a new name plate)
  • Parking is not permitted in the teachers’ parking area.

Parents are requested not to park in the Anglican Church grounds during morning drop off or afternoon pick up. This is private property used only for the parishioners of the Anglican Church.

Thank you for your anticipated understanding and support in keeping a safe school environment for all children.

Thank you for the time, money and effort that has gone into your child/rens uniforms. Please ensure that your child/ren are wearing the correct school uniform as outlined in our Uniform policy on our school website. Just a reminder that sport shoes should be predominately white in colour, this includes shoe laces. If your child/ren are unable to wear the correct school uniform on any given day, please send in a note outlining the reason/s to the class teacher.

Our school Bike Policy was implemented to ensure that children travel safely to and from school. It states clearly that children riding must wear an approved safety helmet and ride in a safe appropriate manner. The policy also requires a Bicycle Users Permission Note to be signed and returned to school. The policy and permission note can be downloaded from the school website or collected from the office.

A reminder to all new and existing families, that St Columbkille’s is an allergy aware school. We have children enrolled who have severe allergies to seafood, nuts, nut products and eggs. Contact with these products may cause a life threatening anaphylactic reaction.

Each year a general walking permission note is sent home for local excursions, sport (Memorial Park, Corrimal) and other school activities within the local community. Please complete and return the signed permission note before Monday, 11 February.

The use of learning technology requires children to accept personal responsibility for their behaviour and actions. Included with the Walking Permission Note, is our school’s ICLT Acceptable Use Agreement. Please take the time to read it carefully, discuss the associated responsibilities with your child/ren and return the signed agreement and parental permission before Monday 11 February.

The annual Photo Permission note was sent home attached to the Walking Permission Note and the ICLT Acceptable Use Agreement.  Please carefully read and return this note to the school office as soon as possible.

Diocesan School Fee Management Policy

It is advisable that all parent/carers have knowledge of the Diocesan School Fee Management Policy, available on the school’s website.  A Frequently Asked Questions document is also provided to assist families with interpretation.

Invoicing and Distribution Of School Fee Statements

Annual school fee Invoice/Statements for this year have been sent home via email on Monday 4 February. If you have not received this correspondence, please contact the school office to request a replacement.  Accounts are due 30 days after the date of invoice unless you have either a School Fee Agreement or Fee Concession arrangement in place.

Introduction of the Excursion Levy

This year we have introduced an Excursion Levy for each child.  This is to cover the cost of all excursions, incursions and sporting events your children attend throughout the year.  It does NOT cover the costs of Gala Days or Diocesan Sport.  The cost is different for every year group as the excursion costs vary for each class.  If you would like more information on the Excursion Levy, please contact the school office for further information.

School Fee Agreements

Families who wish to take advantage of the flexibility of paying their school fees over the school year, rather than paying within 30 days, must have in place a current School Fee Agreement to advise their preferred method of school fee payment, amount and frequency.  For your convenience, this Agreement  is included above.  Agreements are also accessible from the school office and website.

Please note:  If you have an existing School Fee Agreement you are required to provide an amended version as soon as possible to update your details.  In the case that you are paying by Direct Debit, you may also need to provide an amended authority which will be lodged by the school on your behalf.

  • The School Fee Agreement should be returned to the school office by Friday, 1 March 2018, with any applicable payment authorities.
  • Families who do not return agreements will be subject to full payment within 30 days.
  • Methods of payment offered include: BPay; EFTPOS; Cash/Cheque; Credit Card; Direct Debit with the preferred method being BPay Payments – please refer to the School Fee Agreement for further information regarding each type of payment.
  • Frequencies offered include: Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or intervals that suit the family budget
  • To determine your payment amount, an online ‘School Fee Calculator’ is available on the school’s website.

If You Have An Existing, Or You Wish To Apply For Fee Concession

If your family requires consideration for Fee Concession due to financial hardship, it is necessary to submit an Application for Fee Concession, providing evidence of your financial situation and have an interview with the Principal.  This process will be undertaken by the school annually.  Parent/carers should be assured that these situations will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, respect and empathy.

If you have an existing Fee Concession, we will contact you during the year to conduct an annual review.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school office if you require explanation or assistance in relation to school fee matters.

We at St Columbkille’s are committed to developing the ‘whole child’ and therefore partake in a daily Crunch&Sip® Program.

Crunch&Sip® is a primary school program where students crunch on fruit and/or vegetables and sip water at a time during class every day.  This procedure ensures your child’s brain is kept hydrated and body nourished, helping them to concentrate and perform physical and mental tasks to the best of their ability.  We ask that you include a bottle of water (preferably in a re-usable bottle) and fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s lunch box each day.  Refer to the flyer at the end of the newsletter for ideas.
