Dear Parents and Carers,
On Sunday as part of the Corrimal Community, we celebrated ‘Spring Into Corrimal'. It was a wonderful opportunity to represent our school in the annual march. Thank you to all the students, staff and parents were joined us in presenting our school and the Corrimal community in the march.
Last week we also celebrate National Child Protection Week and White Balloon Day. It is an opportunity for everyone in our community to think about how we can work together to keep all children safe. Importantly, it reminds everyone that we all have a part to play in protecting all children, even small actions can help to improve a child’s future and by building stronger communities, we are creating safer environments for our children.
The theme of the day was ‘Protecting kids is everyone's job, no matter what your job!’. The students K-6 participated in the White Balloon Day Chalk Art Activities which incorporate the theme and key words including Brave, Protect, Safe, Educate, Empower, Care, Trust, Hope and Listen. Finally, in recognition and acknowledgement of the White Balloon Day at afternoon Award Assembly we reinforced the theme of the day. It was a wonderful day and reinforcement and the 3 rules safety rules - We ALL have the right to feel safe with people, - It’s OK to say “NO” if you feel unsafe or unsure and - Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it. It is a great responsibility we have in keeping our kids safe and the students and staff had a lot of fun highlighting in support White Balloon Day.
Thank you for your ongoing support and enjoy your weekend.
Take care.

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
On Wednesday 4 September the St Columbkille’s community gathered for a liturgy and celebration focusing on the stewardship of God’s creation. Mrs Susie Crick from the local ‘Surfriders’ organisation gave a powerful presentation about caring for our earth, and in particular our oceans. Our Enviro Ninjas, with help from Mrs Russo and Mrs Emmett, led the celebration and introduced a new rap song to help the students remember to ‘scrunch it up and chuck it in” our blue bins. A clip showed the students how soft plastics can produce items in our community. Watch this link to see how your soft plastics are being recycled and reused https://www.replas.com.au/
A huge thank you to Mr Zhi Fang who will be organising the collection and removal of our soft plastics to the local Coles store.
Mini Vinnies Gathering
Last Friday (September 6) Harper, Emily, Samuel, and Luca went to the Xavier Centre in Wollongong to discuss what we have achieved as a part of the Minnie Vinnies team at St Columbkille’s. We set up our own table so other schools could look at what we had done over the past 12 months. We played a simulation game which helped us feel the danger and sadness of being a refugee. In the afternoon they presented awards to volunteers and students. During the day, some students from schools, participated in a dress up competition for the Most Formal and the Most Craziest outfit. Unfortunately we did not win but were given a chocolate for participating. Thanks to Mrs Herring for taking us. It was a great day!

Catholic Mission Launch
On Wednesday 18 September our school captains and vice captains will attend the annual Catholic Mission launch. This year we travel to Nowra to St John the Evangelist Church. Following this our Mini Vinnie members will be organising activities and fund raising events to celebrate the month of ‘Soctober.’ The money we raise helps communities, both local and worldwide, to bring fullness of life to all. Thank you for your continued generosity.
Reconciliation
Our second preparation evening will be held next Wednesday 18 September at 6.30pm. We continue to keep these students in our prayers as they prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The sacrament will take place on Wednesday 25 September from 9.30-11am. Parents are welcome to attend but are not required on this morning.

An invitation to discern and propose actions
A process of communal discernment in which we pray, reflect, share, think nationally, think locally and respond with proposals for action will take place within our parishes over the next few months.
You are invited to read about the national themes for discernment and then come to one or more of the sessions across our parishes.

Prayer for Season of Creation
Every five years each school within the Diocese of Wollongong partake in a Cyclic Review. The Cyclic Review highlights the School Review and Improvement (SRI) journey, celebrating the successes, looking at the challenges and discussing future directions. To capture a true indication of the journey we invite parents and carers to participate in our Listening Forum. The forum is an opportunity to consider the aspects of St Columbkille’s we wish to hold onto, as well as new ideas we may have for moving into the future.
The three School Review and Improvement areas within the forum that we will focus on are:
- Catholic Life and Religious Education,
- Students and their Learning
- Parents, partnerships Community Consultation and Communication
The Listening Forum will occur on Tuesday 24 September from 7pm in the Monsignor Downey Hall.
Light refreshments and lucky door prizes will accompany the process. Please RSVP via email info@sccdow.catholic.edu.au .

Year 4 Excursion - Maritime Museum & The Rocks
Here Ye', Here Ye'. In HSIE, Year 4 students have been learning about the First Fleet. On Friday the 6 September, we travelled to Sydney where we visited the Australian National Maritime Museum, toured a replica of Captain Cook's Ship - The Endeavour and had a walking tour of The Rocks. Participating in real-life experiences allowed the story of British Colonisation and its impact on the Eora people unfold for our young students. All students represented our school beautifully and had a thirst for knowledge throughout the day. Thank you Ms Moretti, Mrs Rathbone and Miss Tyndall and to our parent helpers, Mr Immens, Mr Duvall, Ms Pippen and Mrs Jacobson for ensuring Year 4 have every learning experience possible.

September is the month for the Care of Creation. At St Columbkilles our action is to try to reduce our waste stream to landfill. We are introducing soft plastic recycling. To help the other students remember what goes in the ‘old blue bin’ we made signs for the bin, taught them a song and followed it up with a class visit.
The official change over to the summer uniform is Monday 16 September. Parents and carers are asked to check the condition of your child’s uniform, especially their hat. The school uniform is outlined in our Uniform Policy and on page 12 of the Parent Information Booklet It is expected that all children are wearing the correct uniform daily; this includes the correct joggers for both PE and sport. Children not wearing the correct uniform, after a reminder, will be given an ‘Out of Uniform notice’ to be signed and returned to the school office.

Footy Colours Day - Friday 20 September, is a national fundraising campaign held during the month of September to support kids living with cancer. Schools, workplaces, groups and clubs across Australia are encouraged to wear their favourite footy team’s colours and host an event to raise much-needed funds. Every dollar raised supports Fight Cancer Foundation’s education programs to help kids with cancer continue with their education during treatment and recovery.
As a school community, we will be celebrating Footy Colours Day on Friday 20 September. Students and staff are encouraged to wear a jersey from their favourite sports team and provide a gold coin donation.

There has been a change in some of the products that are available within our canteen. Strawberry Moosies, Jumpys (JJs chips) no longer meet the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy and will no longer be stocked. For further information regarding: Healthy School Canteen, please visit the link below:
healthyschoolcanteens.nsw.gov.au
In preparation for the 2020 school year, we are looking into outsourcing the running of our school canteen. Currently aproximatley half the Primary Schools in our Diocese have an external business operating their canteens.
We will begin the tenturing process next term and will keep you updated on the outcome.
We ask that you please claim your child’s lost clothing, lunch and drink bottles from the lost property baskets in the Basement before the end of term. Unclaimed items with no name labels will be washed and either placed in the clothing pool or donated to charity.
Thank you in advance.
We are required to clean up the Administration area of the school for structural renovations which will occur during the school break. In doing so we will be removing items of furnature that we no longer use. The items in good condition will be placed out near the large bin. If you would like to claim the furniture item for your home office, holiday home or the man shed, please feel free to do so.
